I didn’t sleep too well last night. Woke up wide-eyed at 2:33 AM with a Brooks & Dunn song looping in my head. Not exactly the kind of wake-up call I was hoping for.
Eventually rolled out of bed at 7:15 local time. Gayla and I shared a quiet morning over coffee, chatting about what next year’s travel season might look like. Always fun to dream and scheme a bit.
I spent the first part of the day outside, wrapping up the last of ARRL Field Day. Managed to make a few more digital contacts and several more on SSB before I packed it all up around 1 PM. Gayla kept busy on the laptop for a while longer.
Later in the afternoon, we took the boys—Tucker and Oscar—on a wagon ride around the campground. They love it, and it gives us a chance to stretch our legs too. After our lap, Gayla pulled out some inventory to take stock for upcoming shows. Always something to prep for.
Dinner tonight was a solid win: Mango Hatch Chili brats topped with melty Gouda cheese. Can’t complain about camp cooking when it hits like that.
After supper, we went for a longer walk down the road with the dogs. That’s when Gayla spotted a pile of BBQ ribs just sitting on the ground across from our campsite. A group of people had come earlier in the day, sat and ate, and left the leftovers behind. In bear country, no less. Not cool, folks.
We cleaned it up and hauled it .3 miles up the road to the bear-resistant trash container. A small detour, but a necessary one.
On the way back we spotted a mule deer, and even got to chatting with some locals who are camping here for the weekend. Good people. After the dogs settled in for the evening, Gayla and I went on one last walk—just the two of us—around the lake. We saw another mule deer during our loop. Peaceful, quiet moments like that are what this trip is all about.
We wrapped up the night by slowly starting to pack up Clifford. Tomorrow is a travel day.
