We let ourselves sleep in a little this morning, knowing it would be a slower travel day. After a peaceful coffee in the cool mountain air, we slowly got Clifford ready to roll. By 9:19 AM, we were pulling out of camp and heading south down Louis Lake Road.
We made a quick stop at Little Popo Agie Campground just to check it out. It’s a quiet spot with some basic tent sites, but nothing that caught our attention for a future stay. Further down the road, we passed by Louis Lake—where we camped five years ago. It’s still just as beautiful, with clear water and surrounding pine forest.
Eventually, we pulled into Grannier Meadows for a short break. There were a few campsites available, but we decided to keep moving. Clifford climbed to 9,022 feet on Forest Road 309, and that’s where we decided to settle in for the next two nights. Our new home has an incredible front-door view looking straight out over South Pass—just breathtaking.
While Gayla was on a video call with a client, I submitted my Field Day score. I ended up with a claimed score of 590 points and a total of 49 contacts, all on 5 watts of power. Not too shabby! A big thanks to my brother for helping me walk through the submission process.
Later in the afternoon, we hiked up a hill behind camp to see what was on the other side. The map showed the trail continues back a good distance, and we spotted a microwave tower tucked back there—perfect for line-of-sight placement.
On the way back down, the pups were starting to slow down. At 16.5 and 15.5 years old, Oscar and Tucker are doing great—but they earned a ride in our arms for the final stretch.
Though it’s not usually a workday for us, we had shifted our schedule a bit, making today a “semi” work day. Gayla had another client video call in the late afternoon, and afterward, I grilled up some of the delicious Mango Hatch Chili Brats, topped with melted Gouda. Can’t go wrong with that combo.
As evening settled in, I took some time to gently comb the tangles out of Tucker’s fur, while Gayla caught up on some more work. Then we both watched the sunset light up the sky. The view almost didn’t seem real. Gayla took a few photos to capture the moment.
