After a solid 9 hours and 30 minutes of sleep, I woke up feeling rested and ready for the day. Gayla, on the other hand, didn’t sleep quite as well—she had work on her mind and spent the night tossing and turning a bit. Still, the cool night air made for great sleeping weather with the windows open and fans humming gently.
Morning brought an unexpected visit from the local police—not for anything bad, just to see if we needed the electric box unlocked. We appreciated the gesture, but we’re not your typical RV setup. Clifford is fully self-contained and happy off-grid.
While Gayla got some early work done on the computer, I gave Clifford a quick check before we hit the road westbound. After fueling up in Superior, Nebraska—Clifford got diesel, and we got coffee—we made our way toward I-80 near Kearney.
We had a quick detour in North Platte so Gayla could stop by the Quilt Rack and Wool Cubby. She’s got a project in the works and needed some wool. From there, we pushed on to Sidney, Nebraska for more fuel and a chance to walk the dogs.
While we were in Sidney, Gayla ran into Cabela’s to look for a cart for the pups. Oscar, especially, isn’t much of a walker these days—unless he’s being chased by a bear! With a big rendezvous coming up, there’s going to be plenty of walking, and we want him to be part of it without tiring out.
As we rolled into the final stretch of Nebraska and crossed into Wyoming at Pine Bluffs, a light rain cooled things off nicely. We passed through Cheyenne without stopping—we had our sights set on Vedauwoo.
Unfortunately, so did everyone else. With it being Father’s Day weekend, Vedauwoo was packed. Every single campsite was taken.
We pivoted and headed to one of our backup camping spots deeper in Medicine Bow National Forest. After a bit of off-roading, we rolled into camp at 7:45 PM local time. Sure enough, it wasn’t as crowded, and we found a nice quiet spot to set up.
We took the dogs for a walk around camp, and Oscar got to test out his new wagon. He seemed to really enjoy the ride. After a light snack, Gayla fired up the computer to knock out an evening shift.
We covered 471.72 miles today, bringing the trip total to 916.52 miles. Another long but rewarding day on the road.
