We got up somewhat early today and enjoyed our morning coffee while catching up with our parents back home. A slow and easy start to the day, which was perfect for the Fourth of July.

After a bit, we got dressed up and headed out to the range. I participated in the shooting competition—turns out I was the only smoothbore shooter and one of just two flintlock shooters. The targets were a good challenge, and I did alright. There’s just something about shooting black powder on the Fourth that feels right.

Gayla and I grabbed cheeseburgers for lunch, then I went back to finish the competition. I ended up chatting with a father and son who had traveled from western Washington to shoot here. They had never fired a flintlock before, so I handed over mine and let them give it a try. There’s a decent chance I converted them to the ways of the spark and powder!

Afterward, we walked through all the vendor booths and enjoyed some incredible Dutch oven peach cobbler. Gayla picked up a candle mold and a tin box, and I found a fold-out table/chair combo I couldn’t pass up.

Around 4:00 PM, the skies started to darken. I was visiting with Tinker when the wind and rain blew in fast. I stuck it out with him until things eased up, then made a dash for Clifford, where Gayla had already hunkered down.

Another full, memorable day wrapped up. Tomorrow brings a new adventure.

Happy Fourth of July!
