Neither one of us slept well last night—it was muggy and hot, the kind of night where you toss and turn until morning.
We finally got up, made some coffee, and hit the road by 7:55 AM. To make the drive pass more easily, I threw on a podcast while we cruised along.
Clifford needed a drink, so we stopped in Kearney, Nebraska to splash in 30 gallons of fuel. He gave us 9.45 mpg this stretch—definitely not his best. We figured out why: I’d been running about 10 mph faster than usual. Turns out Clifford really likes cruising at 60 mph.
We powered our way through north‑central Kansas all the way to El Dorado. From there, we hung a left and headed east toward Missouri.
Gayla convinced me to stop in El Dorado for some frozen custard. I only had two bites—trying to keep the sugar at bay—but wow, it was good!
By 11:30 PM, I rolled us into Springfield, Missouri.
Miles driven today: 652.34
Total miles so far: 3104.68
We sure didn’t miss the humidity while we were out west—but it seems y’all saved plenty for our return!
