We didn’t exactly hit the road with the kind of efficiency that makes you feel like a seasoned traveler. Our packing game was a little off this morning, and after a few rounds of “Where did I put that?” and “Did we pack the dog bowls?” we finally rolled out at 10:50 AM.

The skies weren’t exactly cheering us on—rain came and went as we made our way out of Missouri and across the border into Kansas. Not the most picturesque start, but the promise of the open road (and the eventual blue skies) kept our spirits high.

Our first stop of the day came just outside Cherryvale, Kansas, which sparked a fun memory—a Popskull Rebels song called Cherryvale came to mind. Funny how certain names or places immediately cue up a soundtrack in your head. We took the opportunity to walk the dogs and stretch our legs a bit, shaking off the stiffness of the morning chaos.

Stop number two came in Augusta, Kansas, where we made our first fuel stop of the trip. The rig was thirsty, and frankly, so were we. We topped off the tank and hit the road again, bound for Nebraska.

The ride to Superior, Nebraska felt every bit like a Long Hard Ride—yes, just like the Marshall Tucker Band song. The road stretched on, but the scenery started to open up, and by the time we reached our destination, we were more than ready to settle in.

We landed at Lincoln Park—no, not that Linkin Park—but a quiet, shaded city park in Superior that offers free camping. We stayed here last July on our western trip and were happy to see it again. It’s such a gem: peaceful, green, and dog-friendly.

After parking, we immediately took the dogs for a stroll and then grabbed a much-needed snack. With the air conditioner humming (and thankfully working like a champ after the pre-trip install), it didn’t take long for the camper to turn into a cool little oasis.

Total miles driven today: 444.80

A solid first day on the road—even with the late start and scattered showers.

More adventures await tomorrow. Stay tuned!
